Closed-Book Exam: What RTA Is & Why Poker Rooms Ban It (2026)

You spent three hours in PioSolver last night. You drilled 3-bet pots until the frequencies felt automatic. At 9 p.m. you open GGPoker, PokerStars, or any major client—and mid-session, a marginal river spot appears. Your finger hovers over Alt-Tab.

That hover is the entire RTA debate in one gesture.

Real-Time Assistance (RTA) is any external input that influences a decision while a hand is live. Platforms do not treat it as a study-tool misunderstanding. They treat it as cheating on a closed-book exam: preparation is encouraged; consultation during the test is not. The penalty is not a warning—it is typically permanent ban plus fund confiscation.

It explains what RTA is, what it is not, and why the industry banned it industry-wide once solvers made perfect advice cheap.

The Closed-Book Protocol: Two Rooms, One Rule

Picture every session as two physical spaces:

The line is timing, not tool quality. PioSolver closed before login = study hall. PioSolver open on a second monitor while you tank a river = exam violation. A laminated push/fold chart on your desk = still RTA if you glance at it mid-hand. Discord voice with a coach saying "jam" = RTA. Moving the solver to your phone does not change the category.

GGPoker's Security & Ecology Policy (SEP, version 20260313) states the principle plainly: "Every decision made at the poker table should be made free of any external assistance." PokerStars' General Terms define prohibited tools as anything that "offer[s] real-time advice on what action to take" or, during gameplay, "provide[s] advice beyond a basic level." Different wording—same closed-book logic.

What Counts as RTA (Exam Violations)

RTA is not one product. It is a class of live decision channels:

PokerStars Head of Game Integrity Francis Lincoln draws an internal distinction between Fully Automated Bots (FABs) and Push-This-Button Bots (PTBBs)—programs that tell a human what to click. Both are prohibited; PTBBs are what the industry now labels RTA.

The "Static Chart" Trap

Many players assume paper is safe. It is not—if it guides the current spot. GGPoker SEP §2.3: "Referring to charts of any kind during play is strictly prohibited." PokerStars allows limited basic preflop reference under narrow conditions (hands to open from each position in unopened pots—no stack-size or situation-specific grids). That PS carve-out does not transfer to GGPoker or most other networks. When in doubt, treat every chart as closed-book contraband.

Why Platforms Ban RTA (Three Structural Reasons)

1. Solvers Collapsed the Skill Gap

Before commercial GTO solvers (~2017–2020), live advice required a strong coach and slow calculation. Today a $50/month subscription returns solver-accurate lines in seconds. A recreational player with RTA can match—or exceed—high-stakes regular accuracy on common spots. The closed-book rule preserves the premise that poker is human judgment under pressure, not lookup latency.

2. RTA Is a Negative-Sum Extraction

When one seat runs RTA, every other seat pays. GGPoker's September 2020 enforcement wave confiscated $1,175,305.43 from 13 banned accounts and redistributed those funds to 4,329 affected players (~$272 average reimbursement per recipient, per Pokerfuse). That is not a victimless rules quirk—it is measurable wealth transfer from honest grinders to cheaters.

3. Detection Economics Now Favor the House

PokerStars reports a >95% proactive RTA detection rate before player reports (PokerCoaching industry survey). How Rooms Detect RTA (Cross-Platform Toolkit)

Specific algorithms are proprietary, but public statements converge on a stack:

There is no "first offense warning" standard for confirmed RTA on major networks. Warnings in GGPoker's 2020 wave applied to 40 accounts under investigation, not to a formal tiered policy—subsequent confirmed use triggers SEP's maximum penalty.

Pre-Session Checklist (Exam-Day Protocol)

Before opening any client:

1. Close all solvers, training tabs, and equity apps—not minimized, closed
2. Remove physical charts from desk or phone camera view
3. End coaching calls; mute Discord study channels
4. Uninstall or disable remote-access tools GG flags (TeamViewer, AnyDesk, etc.) if you play on GGPoker
5. Verify which in-client HUDs your room permits; disable third-party overlays you cannot document as allowed
6. When unsure, email support before playing—not after a flag
