Capped or Not: Three Gates Before You Overbet the River

An overbet is not a vibe. Run the cap test, then price 1.5×/2×/3× with the right three numbers—alpha, MDF, and the indifference bluff share—before you staff value and air.

Most bad overbets fail the same way: the sizing is polar, the hand is not. Top pair “for value,” a semi-strong two pair that hates a raise, or a thin bluff into a range that still holds the nuts—those are merged problems dressed up as aggression. GTO Gecko, RiverOdds, and The Poker Place all land on the same precondition: nut advantage + polarity + a capped opponent. Skip the gates and the math below is decoration.

Gate 1 — Are They Capped?

Ask one question before you invent a size: after this exact line, can villain still hold the effective nuts at meaningful frequency?

Capped means their continuing path stripped (or never contained) the monsters your overbet claims. Classic river pattern: you bet flop, they call; turn checks through; river completes an obvious draw. Their turn check deletes a huge slice of nutted hands that would have bet. Your range still contains the completed nuts. That is a permission slip.

Not capped means they can still have the same monsters you are representing—four-flush board where they can hold the nut flush, or a line where they check-raised earlier with sets. Overbetting here does not “apply pressure”; it builds a pot against a range that owns you.

If you cannot say “capped” out loud with a reason tied to the line, default to pot or less. Polarity without a cap is cosplay.

Gate 2 — Is Your Betting Range Allowed to Be Polar?

An overbet range has two bins only: hands that crush their calling band, and hands with near-zero showdown value that win when they fold. Everything in the middle—vulnerable top pair, weak two pair, “maybe I turn this into a bluff because the board is scary”—belongs in a smaller bet or a check.

One idea that must die: “they likely have a full house, so I bluff and represent a bigger full house.” If they likely have a full house, fold equity collapses and you are crushed when called. That is −EV dressed as creativity. Overbet bluffs need folds from bluff-catchers, not heroism against nutted calling ranges.

VIP-Grinders and BeyondGTO’s river notes repeat the same filter: medium hands hate facing a raise after a huge bet. If your hand cannot call a jam, it should not be overbetting.

Gate 3 — Does Stack Depth Let You Print the Size?

River overbets live roughly in the SPR ≈ 1–3 band. Below ~1 you are shoving, not “sizing.” Above ~3, a 2×–3× bet leaves awkward hinterland and usually wants a smaller polar size or a multi-street plan. Stack depth is a constraint, not a personality trait.

Same Pot, Three Numbers (Do Not Swap Them)

Pot (P). Bet (B). Three different jobs:

Alpha and MDF always sum to 1. The bluff share is not alpha—that mix-up is why people claim “pot bet = 50% bluffs.” PokerSkill’s MDF glossary and the indifference algebra agree: at pot, bluff share is (P/(P+2P)=1/3), while alpha is 50%.

Read the table left to right as the bettor, then flip seats: against a 2× overbet you only owe ~33% continues if they are balanced. Bigger size → higher allowed bluff fraction in a balanced polar range, and lower MDF on the defending side. That is why solvers lean huge when the cap is real—not because “big looks scary.”

GTO Gecko’s 150% example (~37.5% bluffs) matches the indifference column. Treat any article that lists “150% → 50% bluffs” or “2× → 33% bluffs” as having swapped alpha/MDF into the mix column.

Staff the Bet: Value First, Then Air That Removes Calls

Value. Only hands that beat the band you expect to peel. On a dry, rainbow river where no straight or flush is possible—say K♦7♠2♣3♥Q♠ after a button open / BB defend, two streets of action—sets and strong two pair (KQ-type) are the spine. Thin AK is usually not an overbet; it wants a size that still gets worse kings and folds out pure air without inviting a jam from the nuts.

Air. Pick zero-SDV hands that block their continues. On that K-7-2-3-Q rainbow board, no flush exists. Suit “diamond blockers” or “don’t hold a diamond so you unblock missed flush draws” is cargo-cult advice—there is nothing to unblock. Rank removal matters: a brick like JT that blocks KJ / QT peels beats random 94 that blocks nothing. When the board does allow a flush, then suit blockers to calling flushes (and unblocking missed flush air) earn their keep. Match the blocker story to the board you are actually on.

Count combos to the table above. If you have nine value combos at 1.5×, indifference wants roughly (9\times 3/5 = 5.4) bluff combos—not “a few,” not “as many as feel scary.”

Flip the Chair: Defending the Same Math

You face 1.5×. Pot odds on a pure bluff-catcher: you call (1.5P) to win (P+1.5P), so you need (1.5/(1+3)=) 37.5% equity vs their betting range. Range-level MDF is still 40%. Close numbers, different objects—one is “does this hand clear the price,” the other is “does my range continue enough.”

Build the continue bin from the top down: nutted hands always; then bluff-catchers that block value and unblock air. Fold the rest without apology. Against a 2× you are allowed to fold ~67% of your range if they are balanced—folding “a lot” is not a leak by itself.

Population edits (one sentence each):

  • Never show an overbet bluff → overfold vs MDF; treat the size as nearly pure value.
  • Spray overbets with random air → call wider than MDF (defend past the floor)—say it that way; “undercall” means the opposite and should not appear in this seat.
  • Your table overfolds to huge bets → add bluff frequency toward (or past) the indifference share; if second pair keeps snapping you off, cut bluffs and keep the value spine.

One Permission Spot, Worked Once

Button open, BB call, ~100bb. Flop T♠9♠2♦, you c-bet small, they call. Turn 4♣ checks through. River J♠—flush and straight land. Pot ~20bb, ~55bb behind (SPR ~2.75).

Gate check: turn check-through caps a big slice of their flopped sets / strong two pair that would have bet turn; your range still holds nut flushes, straights, and some slow-played monsters. Polar is allowed.

Size: 1.5× (~30bb) fits the SPR and the math row above—alpha 60%, bluff share 37.5%, value:bluff 5:3.

Value examples: A♠Q♠ (nut flush), the straights that just arrived. Bluff examples: A♥Q♦—Ace blocks some Ax continues and the Queen blocks KQ/Q8-type straight peels—not because it “looks like a flush,” but because it removes specific continue combos. Missed non-spade air without blockers is worse staff.

If they lead small into you instead of checking, re-run Gate 1: a donk can be capped junk or a strong hand protecting against the obvious scare card. Do not autopilot the overbet shove without re-checking the cap.

Kill Switches

  • Merged hand in a polar size → check or bet smaller.
  • Opponent uncapped for the nuts you represent → no overbet.
  • Double-paired / full-house-heavy boards where their continue band is nutted → bluffing is usually suicide; value only if you beat full houses.
  • Inventing flush-blocker logic on rainbow runouts → fix the story; use rank removal.
  • Memorizing MDF and ignoring that this villain never bluffs this size → overfold.

Leave with the gates, not a slogan: capped → polar → stack allows the row → then staff to the indifference mix. Defense is the same table read upside down.
