You Missed Everything. The Pot Is $128. Shove $39 or Quit?

A busted Q♠J♠ after check-raise flop / half-pot turn leaves a 0.3 SPR river. Recompute the shove price, fix the blocker ledger, and decide when Upswing’s “give up combo draws” heuristic actually applies.

Stop at the river for a second. Don’t narrate the flop again yet.
You’re risking $39 to win $128. Pure-bluff break-even fold equity is:
FE = 39 / (39 + 128) = 39/167 ≈ 23.4%
That’s cheap. Not “free.” Cheap. If villain folds even a quarter of a sticky one-pair-heavy range, the jam prints. If he never folds top pair and his range is almost all top pair, you burn $39 into a brick wall.
The rest of this piece is only about whether Q♠J♠ clears that bar on this exact runout—and which cousin hands fail it.
Rewind: How SPR Got This Ugly
$1/$2 online, $100 effective. Hijack opens to $5 with Q♠J♠. Cutoff (solid reg) calls. Big Blind calls. Pot $16.
Flop T♠9♠2♥. BB checks. You check, planning the raise. Cutoff stabs $7. You check-raise to $26. He calls.
Pot path: $16 + $7 + $26 + $19 = $68. Each of you has $69 left.
Turn 4♦ — blank for both draws. You bet $30 (~44% pot). He calls again.
Pot $128. Stacks $39. River SPR ≈ 0.30.
River 2♣. Flush and straight both dead. Board: T♠9♠2♥4♦2♣. Your hand is queen-high trash.
Upswing’s combo-draw primer is blunt about the default here: fire flop/turn with the equity, then often waive the river when you brick, because many missed combo draws block other missed draws and leave villain denser in made hands. That default is right more often than Twitter threads admit. The question is whether this combo—QsJs on a T9xx paired brick—is one of the exceptions GTO Wizard keeps writing about: blockers are relative; blocking calls can outweigh blocking some folds.
What Survived Two Bets (Without Magical Thinking)
After a flop check-raise to ~3.7× and a turn half-pot call, Cutoff is not “pure air.” He’s also not “only AT/KT forever.”
A usable sketch of hands that can get here—weights, not a solver dump:

Two corrections the old version of this spot got wrong:
- QJ is not in his calling range. You’re holding Q♠J♠. Treating “QJ removed from his callers” as a blocker win is fiction—those combos were never top-pair calls on this board. Your Q/J matter because they cut QT and JT.
- Sets are not “basically gone because they raise turn.” Plenty of regs flat a half-pot turn with sets to keep your draws paying. Some raise. Discount the set weight; don’t delete it. TT/99/44 still exist as a thin, ugly slice of the calling pile.
Rough pre-removal count if we pretend he arrives with a sticky top-pair core plus some two-pair/sets and a thinner draw-fold region:
- Call-leaning: AT 12, KT 12, QT 12, JT 12, T9 ~6–9, sets/boats ~6–10 (already discounted) → ballpark 60–70 “pain” combos before your cards.
- Fold-leaning: various missed spade draws and non-pair straight draws that peeled the flop raise → maybe 20–30 combos depending how wide he peels.
Those are order-of-magnitude buckets. Don’t tattoo them on your HUD. The math only needs him above ~23% folds for the shove to clear immediate EV.
The Removal Ledger for Q♠J♠
Board already ate T♠9♠2♥4♦2♣. You hold Q♠J♠.
What you cut from callers
- QT: without your queen, 4Q × 3T = 12. With Q♠ dead → 9.
- JT: without your jack, 12 → 9.
- You do not get to subtract “QJ callers.” Those were never there.
Net: you strip 6 top-pair combos (3 QT + 3 JT) off the sticky core. That’s real.
What you cut from folders
- Some Q-high / J-high busted spade draws (Q♠8♠-type, J♠8♠-type).
- Broadway gutshots that were already folding (KQ/QJ-ish trash).
Mildly negative. Not catastrophic—especially because you don’t hold the A♠, so nut-flush bricks remain in his folding region.

This is the “block calls, unblock folds” filter from river-bluff coaching material (The Poker Place’s missed-draw lessons say it the same way; Saulo Costa’s river raise notes lean on auto-continue vs auto-fold regions). QsJs clears the filter. A♠5♠ fails it hard. 8♠7♠ fails it sideways.
So: against a thinking Cutoff who will dump some underpairs / worst Tx / pure missed draws and sometimes find a scared fold with bad kickers, ~23% folds is reachable, and your QT/JT removal helps. Against a station who announced “draws always miss, I call,” the same hand is a donation—blockers don’t invent folds.
When the “Usually Give Up” Heuristic Still Wins
Upswing’s river advice for missed combo draws is a population survival tool: most players over-bluff every brick with every busted draw. Average EV of “always jam QJs/KQs/87s/A5s alike” is awful.
Give up more when:
- Your specific cards block the folding region harder than the calling region (A♠x♠ on a missed flush board is the classic).
- Villain’s line was pot-commitment theater—tiny turn calls from stations who hate folding pairs once the pot is “big.”
- Your image is “barrels every draw.” Then even QsJs gets called lighter.
- The river completed his obvious value (front-door flush, broadway straight) while you still hold air. Different node; don’t import this brick’s math.
GTO Wizard’s flush-draw article is useful precisely because it refuses the slogan. Missed flush draws are often checked; they become jams when (a) you have nowhere else to find bluffs, or (b) a side-blocker (like a king that also blocks his made hands) outweighs the spade-removal tax. QsJs here is closer to case (b): the Q/J are calling-range blockers first, flush blockers second.
If Stacks Were Deep, the Price Changes
Same river, imagine $200 behind into $128.
- Pot-sized bet $128 needs 50% folds for immediate profit.
- 1.5× pot ($192) needs 60%.
- A $200 overbet needs ≈ 61%.
At 0.3 SPR you can jam almost any decent blocker and let the price do work. Deep, you only fire large with the best removal (QsJs / KsQs type), and you check more of the 87s/A5s pile. Polar story, polar size—or don’t bother. Half-pot “bluffs” into a capped-looking one-pair range often look weak and get hero-called by the exact hands you needed to fold.
Two Forks, No Checklist Theater
Station / “pair is a pair” recreational: Check. You’re not folding him. Harvest value next time you hit. The 23% number is irrelevant if his fold% ≈ 5%.
Aware reg, underbluffed node: Mix. QsJs is a high-frequency jam candidate because the price is soft and the blockers point the right way; still check sometimes so he can’t auto-call every brick knowing your line is draw-or-set. You’re not solving for 73.2%—you’re refusing to be a timer-bank that always jams or always gives up.
If you’ve shown three failed barrels this session, downshift. Fold equity is a player state, not a formula carved in stone.
I wouldn’t open a training app mid-hand for this. Run the price (risk / (risk + pot)), name two calling hands you block, name one folding class you don’t block, then act. On this board, with this SPR, Q♠J♠ shoves; A♠5♠ and 8♠7♠ mostly don’t.
