Pot odds answer "should I call?" Fold equity answers "how much do I gain if they fold?" Semi-bluffs use both—fewer folds are needed because draw equity covers part of the cost when called.
Pure Bluff: Breakeven Fold %
With zero showdown equity (air):

Semi-Bluff: Two Ways to Win
EV = P(fold) × pot + (1 − P(fold)) × [equity × (pot + bet) − (1 − equity) × bet]
Worked Example
Spot: Turn pot = $80. You bet $40 (half pot) with a combo draw (~35% equity if called—flush draw + overcards with one card to come).
Estimate villain folds 45%:
- Fold branch: 0.45 × $80 = $36.00
- Call branch: 0.55 × [0.35 × $120 − 0.65 × $40] = 0.55 × [$42.00 − $26.00] = 0.55 × $16.00 = $8.80
- Total EV = $44.80 — profitable even though pure-bluff breakeven was 33.3% fold.
Compare to pure air at same sizing: at 45% fold, EV = 0.45×80 − 0.55×40 = 36 − 22 = +$14.00. Semi-bluff adds $30.80 from the call branch.

The barrel is −EV as pure bluff but marginally +EV as semi-bluff—exactly why draw equity matters. Against a station (15% fold), both lines lose. Player type sets whether the bluff is viable.
If turn bricks and river misses, recalculate—a second barrel needs its own breakeven fold %.
Three-Step Checklist Before Bluffing
- Write pot and bet — street by street, no drift
- Compute breakeven fold % — bet ÷ (pot + bet)
- Compare to fold estimate — based on line, player type, board (not vibes)

Modern pools often fold 45–55% to pot-sized turn barrels heads-up—but that is a pool tendency, not your spot's number. Villain's line matters more than a generic stat.
Three Common Errors
Confusing fold equity % with breakeven % — "I have 30% fold equity" is not the same as "I need 33% folds." State both: breakeven threshold vs your estimate.
Semi-bluffing without draw equity — Jamming dominated draws on boards with reverse implied odds is not a semi-bluff.
Same bet size every street — Each street is a new decision. Turn breakeven ≠ flop breakeven because pot size changed.
