KJs, 25bb, Two Players Still In: The Bubble Jam That Lives on Fold Product

BTN opens, SB flats, you hold KJs in the BB on a money bubble. The shove is not an ICM lecture—it is a fold-product bet with honest multiway equity and a few kill switches.

BTN opens to 2.5bb. SB cold-calls. Effective stacks ~25bb. Money bubble. You look down at KJs in the big blind.
Most writeups open with a seminar on ICM, then discover the hand. Flip that. The only number that decides this shove is how often both of them release—and what your equity looks like on the minority of boards where someone does not.
Seat Map Before the Math
Three medium stacks around a pay jump do not share the same fear.

The SB line is the one people misread. Population flats on the bubble are mostly not AA/KK—those hands more often isolate or jam themselves. That is a base rate, not a law. A known trapper who flats premiums to induce is a different seat map. Treat “SB is capped” as the default, and “SB might be trapping” as a kill switch later—not as two opposite claims in the same paragraph.
Dead Money Ledger
Count chips at the decision node (blinds and ante already in):
- Ante (BB ante style): 1bb
- BTN open: 2.5bb
- SB call: 2.5bb
- Your big blind: 1bb
- Pot = 7bb
You have 24bb behind. A shove puts 24 more in. If both fold, you win the 7bb uncontested—+7bb versus folding (fold keeps the 24 behind and surrenders the pot you already helped build).
If exactly one player calls, they have 22.5bb left after their 2.5bb investment. Final pot ≈ 7 + 24 + 22.5 = 53.5bb. You invested 24 from the decision node. Your chip EV when called is:
EV_call ≈ e × 53.5 − 24
where e is your equity versus the caller’s continue range.
Fold Product (Honest Version)
Action after you jam: BTN acts first, then SB if BTN folds. “Both fold” is a product of two decisions, not a single vibes percentage.
Rough, population-on-bubble sketch (not a solver dump):
- BTN opened ~33%. Continues to a 25bb jam with something like 88+, AJs+, AQo+ after card removal—on the order of ~15–20% of that open. So BTN folds roughly 80–85% of opens.
- SB’s flat is thinner. Continues with something like TT+, AQs+, AK—maybe ~25–35% of flats, so SB folds ~65–75% when BTN has already released.
Independent-style product:
0.82 × 0.72 ≈ 0.59 both fold
Call that ~55–65% both fold depending on how loose the table is, with ~60% as a middle working number—not the old article’s cheerful 62–65% ceiling. Cold-callers do fold a lot in squeeze theory (public guides often cite ~70–80% fold rates for callers facing squeezes), but bubble call-off thresholds tighten the continue side and the open side; do not stack every optimistic number on top of every other.
When someone continues, most of the mass is heads-up. Double-calls happen, but they are the minority—and they are the scenario where people invent equity.
Equity When Called: Stop Using 31% Blindly
Hold KJs. Against a tight HU continue like 99+, AQs+, AKo, weighted combo equity after you remove a king and a jack lands nearer ~27%, not 31%. Against a slightly wider bubble call (88+, AJs+, AQo+) you are still in the high-20s. Against a nit continue (QQ+, AK) you can dip toward the mid-20s.
Plug 27% into the HU formula:
0.27 × 53.5 − 24 ≈ −9.6bb
That is the cost of getting called once. The shove is not “KJs flops well.” It is “we buy ~60% of +7bb and pay ~40% of about −9 to −10bb.”
Working chip EV:
0.60 × 7 + 0.40 × (−9.6) ≈ 4.2 − 3.8 ≈ +0.4bb
Bump fold-both to 62% and you sit nearer +1bb. Drop it to 55% with the same equity and you are near scratch or slightly negative in chips.
Multiway honesty: if both call, the pot swells toward ~76bb, but your share of that pot is not “still ~31%.” Against two strong ranges, KJs often realizes closer to the low-to-mid 20s. That makes the rare double-call worse than the HU case, not a rounding error you can ignore by quoting the HU number. Weight a little multiway mass into the called branch and the total chip EV shrinks further—still often modestly positive on a scared bubble, not a printer.
ICM: the chips you lose when called are worth more $ than the chips you win when they fold. That cuts the dollar EV of any shove relative to chip EV. The same pressure is why fold frequencies rise. Do not quote a fake ICMIZER $EV for a field you did not load. Directionally: chip EV near +0.5 to +1bb with elevated fold rates is the kind of spot that can clear $EV; if opponents call like a cash game, fold it.
Why This Hand, Not a Random Suited Broadway
Blockers are combo removal, not magic:
- You cut KK and JJ from 6 combos to 3 each.
- You cut AK (AKs 4→3, AKo 12→9) and AJ similarly.
- You do not block QQ or AQ—those still call when they want to.
That removal nudges fold equity up and thins the worst of the call-off range. Suitedness adds a little multiway playability if you somehow see a flop, but at 25bb the point of the line is usually not to see a flop.
Premiums that want action (AA–QQ, and often AK) are a different job in the same shove bucket. AK versus a tight call-off is closer to a coin / slight dog against pairs-plus-AQ than a free “>50% forever” label. Value hands shove because they dominate the hands that do continue and because they still pick up folds; do not pretend every premium is a locked favorite versus the continue range.
Flat Is Not a Soft Version of the Same Play
Calling 1.5bb more for ~4.7:1 feels cheap. It is a different game:
- Pot ~8bb, ~22.5bb behind, OOP multiway.
- You gave up the fold product.
- Most flops you check-fold or face a sticky turn with tournament life attached.
Flatting KJs here is for weird reads (BTN opens 12%; SB never folds post). Default bubble script at 25bb is jam or fold, not “take the discounted flop.”
Non-all-in squeezes to ~7–8bb look prettier in deeper bubble sims (GTO Wizard-style 40bb ICM squeezes often prefer smaller raises and fewer jams). At 25bb, a small raise leaves an awkward SPR, prices in reshoves, and turns your “semi-bluff” into a pot you may have to call off anyway. If you are going to apply pressure with KJs at this depth, shove.
Kill Switches
Flip the default only with a concrete note:
- SB flats premiums. Fold equity collapses. KJs becomes a fold (or a rare flat if you somehow love the postflop dynamic—which you should not).
- BTN opens 22% and never folds to 3-bets. Same story—your fold product dies.
- Both players are covering you and ICM-illiterate. They call too wide; tighten to true value and strong Ax blockers, leave KJs in the muck.
- You are the table short stack and they are mediums who hate busting. Fold product improves; KJs gets better, not worse.
DeepFold-style resteal math for heads-up KJs shoves at ~22bb is already borderline and blocker-dependent. Adding a cold-caller adds dead money and a second continue seat. The bubble is what keeps the multiway version alive—without it, this is a thin or losing jam.
Leave the Table With the Product
You are not “doing ICM.” You are betting that BTN folds most steals and SB folds most flats, that KJs is ~high-20s when one of them wakes up, and that double-calls are rare and ugly. Recheck the fold product every orbit. When it breaks, the hand breaks with it.
